A Suggested Itinerary
Day One: Arrive and become familiarized with Petersburg, including the downtown area, the waterfront, canneries, restaurants, tours. Pick up "fish" for dinner from a restaurant or local fish market to barbeque.
Day Two: 8-hour whale watching excursion into Frederick Sound.
Day Three: With over a hundred miles of roads on our island, you'll want to spend at least a day exploring the island, including the Three Lakes Loop Rd. and the boardwalk hiking trails within the Tongass National Forest.
Day Four: Spend a half-day on an excursion to LeConte Glacier Bay--hanging glaciers, icebergs, wildlife. Finish exploring the road system; take a picnic lunch to the Blind River Rapids boardwalk loop trail and the Ohmer Creek trail.
Day Five: Spend a relaxing day biking, walking local trails, or strolling through town. See the local sites, including the Clausen Memorial Museum and store, the shops, and the docks. Take a tour of a small cannery. Don't forget fish for lunch!
Days Six and Seven: If you enjoy more vigorous outdoor activities, plan a day to hike the trail up to Raven's Roost or rent kayaks for a trip up Petersburg Creek--weather and/or tide dependent. You might also like to spend a day, or two, sport fishing for halibut or salmon.
Petersburg has one of the largest fishing fleets in Alaska. Through careful conservation efforts, our natural salmon runs remain very strong. While you're here, be sure to enjoy the many varieties of wild Alaska salmon, as well as halibut, crab, shrimp, and the other bounties of our local waters.
